Pelargonium home: a riot of colors in the interior (24 photos)

A plant native to South Africa conquered the European continent already in the 16th century. Pelargonium or geranium (this. Geranium) has long become our favorite indoor and balcony plants.

It is rapidly spreading around the globe, becoming one of the most popular plants. They love geranium for decorative, unpretentious, simple reproduction and healing properties. And there are so many kinds and varieties that everyone can choose according to their taste and color.

In the world there is no coherent classification of pelargonium into groups, species and varieties. There are classifications proposed by different breeders, but none of them can be called perfect. This is due to the fact that in the past century many new varieties were bred: dwarf and variegated forms, with two-color and terry flowers.

Most often, pelargonium is divided into the following groups:

  • Zonal.
  • Ivy or balcony.
  • Large-flowered (flowering) or royal.
  • Angels
  • Unicums

Pelargonium fragrant stands out as a separate group, which does not differ beautiful flowering, but has carved leaves. To a greater extent it can be attributed to the decorative forms. But this division is conditional, since fragrant pelargoniums include different types.

The variegated geranium is considered as a separate group, but again there are ivy and fragrant plants among these plants. We will get acquainted with the most interesting varieties of this common and unpretentious room culture. So, we present varietal pelargoniums.

Royal Pelargonium: Blue Blood

The most popular is pelargonium, the varieties of which are unique and decorative. The large-flowered king pelargonium is one of the brightest and most refined representatives of the species. Beautiful wavy petals and a flower diameter of 4-6 cm. Distinguishes this species from other flowering forms. Perhaps that is why it is the most capricious and demanding to the growing conditions:

  • after rooting, the flowering begins only in the second year;
  • does not grow in the open air, in front gardens;
  • flowering lasts only 3-4 months;
  • in winter, it should be at a temperature of + 11-13C in bright light, otherwise in summer the plant does not bloom;
  • spring needs a transplant, fever and abundant watering.

Royal Pelargonium at home requires special treatment, although most other varieties are easy to grow.

Ivy Pelargonium: ampelous beauty

Drooping, thin, branched stems allow you to define this plant in the ampelous group. Ilean pelargonium is distinguished by a fleshy and glossy leaf blade resembling ivy leaf. Flowers form inflorescences, umbrellas of various colors: white, pink or purple. There are unusual varieties with bronze or variegated leaves.

The amber pelargonium looks best in pots or hanging boxes. Drooping stems end with long pedicels covered with flowers, among which there are terry forms. This beautiful indoor flower in the beds grows into a solid carpet of colorful bushes.

Pelargonium fragrant: fragrant "Cinderella"

Pelargonium fragrant aroma is different and is used to produce geranium oil. If the leaf is rubbed, the flavor will intensify. The lamina plate is strongly cut, therefore it does not look like a sheet of room geranium. It blooms modestly, and bushes, growing to a meter, do not differ particularly decorative. Although there are attractive varieties, but again due to the leaves, not flowers.

It can be used as a seasoning for dishes, for the production of beverages and sweets. The species includes about 100 varieties, each of which has a special flavor. And it's not scary that this species practically does not bloom. Most importantly, it gives fragrant oil with different flavors.

With its history, pelargonium tulip can be proud of - in its creation lies the secret. Bred it in the nursery Andrea (this is a family nursery in Boston). In 1966, presented at the exhibition as a new hybrid. But many consider this species to be just a mutation, because without proper care it loses its ornamental qualities, becoming the same as ordinary pelargonium home.

If you follow the simple rules of care for this crop, it will please the well-groomed appearance and abundant flowering, and its cultivation will turn into pleasure.

There are no special secrets here, but there are three main ways of reproduction.

The most simple and affordable way is grafting. Cuttings can be cut in March-February or July-August. Cut stalks should be 5-7 cm in size with 2-3 leaves.

It is slightly dried (allowed to dry, but not dry) and planted in the substrate. Need abundant watering, but should not be covered. After about a month, the cutting will take root and can be planted in a separate container.

You can simply put the process in the water and get a small plant with a root system. If you worry that your pet will not give roots, add growth stimulants to the water, for example, Kornevin.

How to plant a plant?

Planting pelargonium traditional, as for most indoor cultures:

  • The flower pot must fit the size of the plant.
  • There are drainage holes at the bottom so that excess moisture flows into the pan.
  • If you plan to rearrange the plant, it is better to use a plastic container for planting.
  • Pick up the soil: it should be loose, dry well and contain organic matter. It is better to use the purchase of good quality soil.
  • Pour the soil mixture into the pot, making a hole in the middle for the roots.
  • Pour water into the recess, place the plant roots and cover it with earth.
  • Planted in such a way, put the plant in its designated place.
  • If geranium does not bloom for a long time, find a lighter area in the apartment for it.

If the pot for planting culture is not new, then it must be thoroughly rinsed and disinfected with a solution of potassium permanganate. In such a pot can be bacteria that can infect the plant planted in it.

The flower pelargonium is a unique ornamental and medical plant. It will bring in the house bright, saturated colors and will relieve the air from pathogenic bacteria. It will make your home cozy and green, without demanding a special relationship with you. Perhaps that is why beauty-geranium peeps out of many windows in the houses.
