Clogging up in sewer pipes is most often caused by accumulations of food debris trapped in the sink of a kitchen sink. Finding and removing such blockages can take a lot of time and effort, sometimes it becomes a real problem. The food waste chopper for the sink avoids these difficulties, making the process of disposing of garbage much easier.




Like most modern household appliances, the history of the shredder began with the need to improve the quality of life. It happened at the beginning of the 20th century in the USA. A certain American, John Hames, noticed that his spouse regularly throws food waste in a trash can, which is why food residues begin to rot and produce an unpleasant smell after a while, but this was not the worst. Worse, the smell of the waste came from mice, rats and insects. And in 1927, Hames found a solution to this problem: he invented the food waste chopper (displacer).

The grinder is installed under the kitchen sink, its inlet is connected to the sink drain, and the outlet is connected to the sewer pipe. That is, the dispenser, in fact, is a kind of improved siphon. Also, a water supply tube is connected to the chopper, and a pneumatic button is shown on the worktop to start the device. In case an electric displacer is used, an electrical connection is required.

Food waste placed in the sink passes through its drain hole and enters the chopper chamber. At its bottom is a disk with cams, the rotation speed of which is 2000 revolutions per minute. The remains of food under the action of centrifugal force recline on the walls of the chamber, covered with a self-sharpening float. The cams on the disk crush large pieces, and the crushed waste is ground against the walls into powder, which is mixed with water fed into the chamber. The result is a liquid mass, which is discharged through the outlet in the sewer.

The first dispensers are divided by the source of energy.


Blades are installed in their casing, which begin to rotate when water is supplied to the chopper mechanism. These are very powerful devices that can grind even cartilage. They are quite quiet and do not need electricity, which increases the safety of operation. Accordingly, they are the most expensive. However, before choosing a mechanical dispenser, you need to make sure that the water pressure is high enough and there are no failures in its supply. Compared to electric, this option has a lower speed.


Unlike the previous ones, these devices need an electric current to function. Rotating disc with cams easily crushes soft food waste, turning them into a liquid mass, which can safely be drained into the sewer. Depending on the power, they can cope with tasks of varying complexity, which proportionally increases energy consumption.

Electric, in turn, are subdivided into two more types of dispensers, differing in the type of waste loading. The first ones are with continuous feed: remnants of food are placed in the included device and, mingled with water, are ground. After that, the dispenser shuts down and, under the remaining water flow, the treated residues go to the drain. The second - with batch feed: here everything happens the other way around, first the waste is loaded into the chamber, and then the kitchen chopper is turned on. After emptying the camera it is turned off. The latter option is safer, preferred for those who have small children.

From the undoubted advantages of using a household dispenser, you can list the following:

  • eliminating the possibility of blockages due to food debris in sewer pipes;
  • waste no longer remains in the trash, does not rot, does not emit unpleasant odors and does not provoke the appearance of insects or rodents;
  • simplification of the process of washing dishes: do not dispose of leftovers in the bin, you can throw them in the sink and recycle;
  • crushed garbage, passing through the pipes, helps to clean them and prevents the formation of growths;
  • the amount of garbage going to landfill decreases, which has a positive effect on the state of the environment.



Despite all the above, grinders have some disadvantages:

  • when installing the dispenser, it is impossible to use corrugated sewer pipes in which blockages may occur due to recycled organic matter - only smooth walls;
  • since the kitchen grinder works with water supply, the consumption of the latter increases markedly, by about 3 l / day;
  • electric dispenser increases electricity costs by an average of 0.4-0.6 kW / hour;
  • not all models of shredders can cope with solid waste (bones, cartilage), it is impossible to send non-processing synthetic materials, slippery food residues, pour hot fatty broths, etc. (sorting garbage is needed);
  • The cost of a kitchen grinder is relatively high, especially when it comes to the mechanical version.

Choosing a food waste shredder is always worth starting with determining the amount of work that he will have to do. For example, for a family of four, a 400-watt device will suffice. That is, when calculating the need to focus on the value of 100 watts per family member. When buying a very powerful and resourceful disposer, you need to be prepared for the fact that it will create a lot of noise. If you look at quiet models, then you need to immediately pay attention to mechanical ones: they are very productive, do not make noise, and do not need electricity.

Before choosing a food waste chopper for the sink, you need to immediately determine whether there is enough space under this sink and what types of connections will be required. If it is possible to install a separate outlet, then electric dispensers can be considered, if not, then only mechanical ones remain.

A pneumatic button can also be a problem, because most often it is necessary to cut the tabletop to install it, and this should be immediately envisaged (especially if the tabletop is made of stone).
